Iran Slams US Hormuz Blockade as ‘Naive’, Threatens to Restrict Global Oil Route

Iran criticizes US naval blockade of Strait of Hormuz as naive, warns of restricting traffic in key global oil route amid rising tensions.

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most crucial oil transit chokepoints, have sharply escalated after Iran condemned the United States’ naval blockade as a “naive and ignorant decision.”

Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, stated on Sunday (April 19) that Tehran may restrict maritime traffic if the blockade is not lifted.

Iran Issues Strong Warning

Qalibaf criticized the US move, questioning its practicality and fairness:

“What does blockade mean? It means everyone can come and go, but Iran cannot. What a naive and ignorant decision.”

He emphasized that Iran maintains strategic control over the strait:

  • Claimed “the Strait is in our hands”
  • Warned that continued US restrictions would lead to reciprocal action
  • Suggested that global shipping could be impacted

Strategic Importance of the Strait

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to global markets, through which:

  • Nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes
  • Major economies including India, China, and Europe depend on shipments
  • Any disruption can trigger global oil price spikes

IRGC Responds to Blockade

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reinforced the government’s stance, stating:

  • The strait has “returned to its previous state”
  • Any US “breach of promise” will receive a “fitting response”
  • Restrictions will remain as long as Iranian shipping is threatened

Supreme Leader’s Warning

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, escalated rhetoric further, warning of potential military retaliation:

Iran’s navy is ready to “inflict new bitter defeats on its enemies.”

The statement highlighted Iran’s readiness to respond through both naval and drone capabilities.

Global Impact Concerns

The situation has raised serious concerns worldwide:

  • Oil markets could face volatility
  • Shipping routes may become unsafe
  • Risk of military confrontation between US and Iran increases

Experts warn that prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could destabilize global energy supply chains.

What Happens Next?

With both sides taking firm positions:

  • The US continues its strategic pressure campaign
  • Iran signals potential escalation
  • Diplomatic talks remain uncertain despite reports of possible negotiations

The coming days will be crucial in determining whether tensions de-escalate or spiral into a broader regional crisis.
