Deadly Night in Ukraine: Russia Launches 700+ Attacks

Russia fires 700+ drones and missiles on Ukraine, killing 18 in the deadliest attack in months, hitting Kyiv, Odesa, and Dnipro amid rising tensions.

Russian attack in Ukraine

Russia has carried out one of its deadliest aerial assaults in recent months, launching hundreds of drones and missiles across Ukraine overnight, killing at least 18 people and injuring dozens more. The масштаб attack highlights the continued intensity of the war, now entering its fifth year.

Massive Overnight Assault

According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched over 700 aerial weapons, including:

  • 659 drones
  • 44 cruise and ballistic missiles

Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept a large portion of the attack, shooting down:

  • 636 drones
  • 31 missiles

However, direct hits were recorded in at least 26 locations, causing widespread destruction.

Cities Hit the Hardest

The strikes affected multiple cities across Ukraine:

Kyiv

In the capital, Kyiv, four people were killed, including a 12-year-old child, and at least 45 others were injured. A residential building in the Podil district collapsed, trapping residents under rubble before emergency crews rescued survivors.

Odesa

In the southern port city of Odesa, nine people lost their lives, making it the hardest-hit location.

Dnipro

In Dnipro, five people were killed, with several more injured as strikes hit urban areas.

Other Regions

  • Kharkiv saw drone strikes injure civilians
  • Power outages were reported in Mykolaiv and Kherson

Scenes of Destruction

Residents across Ukraine were awakened by air raid sirens around 2:30 AM, followed by explosions. Eyewitness footage showed:

  • Massive fireballs lighting up the night sky
  • Thick black smoke rising over city centers
  • Drones crashing directly into residential buildings

Emergency responders worked through the night, pulling survivors from debris and treating the injured.

Rising Tensions After Brief Ceasefire

The attack comes shortly after a temporary Orthodox Easter ceasefire, which both sides accused each other of violating. The escalation signals a breakdown in any short-term de-escalation efforts.

The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, continues to intensify with no clear resolution in sight.

Ukraine’s Response

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, calling for stronger international action.

He emphasized:

  • The need for tighter sanctions on Russia
  • Increased military aid, especially air defense systems

Ukraine is currently facing a critical shortage of Patriot missile systems, which are essential for intercepting ballistic missiles.

International Concerns Grow

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister also labeled the attack a “war crime”, urging allies to:

  • Increase pressure on Moscow
  • Accelerate military and financial support

There is growing urgency around a proposed €90 billion EU support package, which could strengthen Ukraine’s defense and economy.

Retaliation Inside Russia

Russia reported that two people, including a child, were killed in a Ukrainian drone strike in the Krasnodar region. Several others were injured, indicating that cross-border attacks continue on both sides.

Peace Talks Stalled

Despite multiple rounds of negotiations, peace talks remain stalled.

  • Ukraine is pushing for an immediate ceasefire
  • Russia insists on agreeing to a broader deal first

Efforts led by the United States have slowed in recent months, especially as global focus shifts toward tensions in the Middle East.

Final Take

This latest attack underscores the escalating intensity and human cost of the war in Ukraine. With hundreds of drones and missiles deployed in a single night, it marks a dangerous phase in the conflict.

As civilian casualties rise and infrastructure continues to be targeted, the pressure on global powers to intervene diplomatically—and militarily—continues to grow.

The question now is not just how the war will end, but how much more destruction will occur before it does.
