Trump Refuses to Extend Iran Truce as U.S. Seizes Oil Tanker

Trump signals end of Iran ceasefire as U.S. seizes oil tanker, raising fears of escalation and impacting global oil supply and ongoing peace talks.

Trump Refuses to Extend Iran Truce

U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated he does not intend to extend the fragile ceasefire in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, raising fears of renewed military escalation. The statement came just hours after U.S. forces boarded an Iranian oil tanker in international waters, a move that could further complicate already fragile peace negotiations.

Ceasefire Nears Expiry

With the two-week truce set to expire, Trump made it clear that he is prepared for a military option if diplomatic efforts fail. Speaking to media, he stated that the U.S. military is “ready to go” and suggested that a tougher stance may be necessary to secure a favorable outcome.

The ceasefire, which began earlier this month, was intended to create space for negotiations. However, with only hours remaining, uncertainty surrounds whether talks can prevent a return to conflict.

U.S. Seizes Iranian Oil Tanker

In a major escalation, the U.S. military confirmed it had boarded the Tifani, an Iranian-linked oil tanker carrying approximately 2 million barrels of crude oil. The vessel was intercepted in international waters near Sri Lanka and had reportedly been heading toward Singapore.

U.S. Central Command described the operation as part of broader efforts to disrupt networks supporting Iran’s oil exports, emphasizing that enforcement actions would continue globally.

Iran has not officially responded to the seizure, but officials have warned that such actions could derail negotiations and provoke retaliation.

Iran Warns of Strong Response

Iranian authorities have issued a stern warning, stating that any further military action by the U.S. would be met with a stronger response. Tehran has also made it clear that it is reluctant to engage in talks while its oil exports remain under blockade.

The situation is further complicated by Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint. Iran had briefly indicated it would reopen the strait but reversed its decision after tensions escalated again, effectively restricting the flow of nearly 20 million barrels of oil per day.

Talks in Pakistan Hang in Balance

Despite rising tensions, diplomatic efforts are still underway. Pakistan is set to host another round of talks, with U.S. Vice President JD Vance expected to attend. Iranian officials have indicated they are “positively reviewing” participation but have not made a final decision.

A previous round of negotiations failed to produce any agreement, largely due to disagreements over sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program.

Global Markets React

Financial markets have shown signs of volatility amid the uncertainty. Oil prices, which had surged earlier due to fears of supply disruptions, eased slightly on hopes that negotiations might still proceed. Meanwhile, stock markets in Asia and Europe saw modest gains.

However, the broader economic outlook remains uncertain. The ongoing conflict has already disrupted global energy supplies, increased fuel prices, and raised concerns about a potential global economic slowdown.

Nuclear Issue at the Core

At the heart of the conflict lies Iran’s nuclear program. The U.S. is demanding that Iran abandon its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which could be used to develop nuclear weapons. Iran, however, insists its program is for peaceful purposes and seeks relief from sanctions.

What Comes Next?

With the ceasefire on the brink of collapse and military forces on high alert, the coming days will be critical. Whether diplomacy prevails or conflict resumes will have far-reaching consequences—not just for the region, but for global energy markets and geopolitical stability.

For now, the world watches closely as tensions escalate and the window for peace narrows.
